it will close its last manufacturing plants in the United States and Canada by
next March.
Officials from the San Francisco-based firm said Thursday nearly 2,000 jobs
will be lost because of the closures. The firm will shift its production to
foreign firms.
The Levi's brand is 150 years old and is accepted as the original blue jeans.
During the 1950's and 1960's, when the U.S. "baby boom" generation was growing
up, Levi's were in many Americans' wardrobes, but the brand has found less
appeal with today's youth.
The Levi Strauss company's chief executive officer, Phil Marineau, says that
in order to remain competitive, the company needs to focus on product design and
development, sales and marketing and retail customer relationships.
