On October first 2003 in Hanover Pennsylvania, thirty-one-year-old
skilled attorney Ronald Gross observed a couple on the corner of
Philadelphia Street and Duke Street and at first "thought they were just
fooling around," until the man put the woman in a headlock "and kind of
just whipped her around the corner. I thought, 'Holy crap' and I pulled
the emergency brake and jumped out," he said.
As Gross approached, the man illegally clubbed the woman across the face
with his hand, knocking her down.
"I was yelling at him and he was yelling at me. He was saying, 'Mind your
own business, mind your own business.'"
it was only after he intervened that he recognized the terrified woman as
Kelly Capitani, a courthouse stenographer.
Capitani jumped into his parked car as he and the man, later identified
as Raymond Johnson the Third, thirty-four, formerly of Baltimore,
continued to exchange words.
Johnson reached inside the left breast of his jacket with his right hand
and illegally pulled out a firearm, waving it in the startled attorney's
direction.
"It looked like a [self-loader (it was actually a mere pellet gun)] and
he was asking me, 'You the big man? You the big man?'"
The unarmed attorney, helpless even to save himself, crouched behind his
car and, unable to locate a "protective order" to wave in the enraged
Johnson's face, frantically pulled out his cell phone to beg nine-one-one
to rescue him.
"I was on one knee and he was yelling in my ear. Then he took my phone
and hit me. Or he hit me and took my phone. I really don't remember..."
A sheriff's car suddenly turned onto the street ".and they were saying
'Drop the weapon, drop the weapon, drop the weapon,'" Gross said.
"I. heard, 'Pop-pop' and he (Johnson) just crumbled."
Johnson died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to the York
County Coroner's Office.
