U.S. Senate Candidate reports on Denver
courthouse treatment

June 7, 2002 - Speakout Vail!
Letter to the Editor, from Rick Stanley, Libertarian Candidate for U.S. Senate

Dear Editor,

During a break in my second amendment infringement trial, I was handing out flyers in the halls of the courthouse announcing my U.S. Senate campaign. Soon I had three guards tell me I couldn't do that.

I asked them to show me the law that said I couldn't, and they couldn't, so I told them that they would have to excuse me, because I was busy handing out flyers. They were stunned, and left.

Their boss came to talk with me, same story, same result. Next thing I know, I am surrounded by six sheriffs deputies for the City and County of Denver. You know, the HOMERULE city. This is where it became fun.

The head guy of the group informed me, that it was against the law to do what I was doing. I asked him if it was against the law, or some city ordinance? He thought a second, and decided it was against an ordinance. Which one I said? He didn't know, but said I still had to stop. I explained that he was mistaken, and that my free speech rights from the first amendment to the US Constitution, took precedence over their silly little ordinance. I explained I was in court in with Judge Patterson for the same type of issue, and asked if they were they going to arrest me for this as well? Well no, was the reply, but would I go with them to another building, to look up the statute?

No, was my reply, because I was currently very busy handing out flyers announcing my U.S. Senate candidacy, and I couldn't interrupt such an important endeavor, to go look up a silly ordinance. Besides the last time a cop asked me to come with him, he delivered me to the Denver Police who arrested me on a BOGUS WARRANT.

I watched six mouths drop to the floor, and I gave flyers to three of them that would accept, and they all left, saying they would be back. They never returned, and during the two days of my trial I handed out at least 500 flyers, enjoyed the dirty looks of the guards, and continued to hand out my flyers during each and every break. I continued giving flyers to sheriff deputies, guards, lawyers, defendants and workers in the building. And you all wonder why I am such a fun guy!

We must be prepared to go to jail from now on, in each and every case of our rights infringements. That is my pledge. They know it, and really, really hate having me in their jail, reminding them that they are failing to uphold their oath of office to defend the Constitution, just because some boss, tells them to do something unconstitutional. I informed them that this was a treasonous act, an act of war on the American people, and to threaten Americans at the point of a gun, might eventually be unhealthy for each and every one of them. Fascism is democracy at the point of a gun.

Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate
