December 18, 2001 NEWS RELEASE Stanley for U.S. Senate
=========================================================== (DENVER CO) On Tuesday, December 18, 2001 the Rocky Mountain News printed a story entitled "2 foes of ban on concealed guns out of jail." The story goes on to state, "Duncan Philp and Rick Stanley said they plan to use their arrests to challenge the constitutionality of Denver's ban on carrying concealed weapons." In fact, Rick and Duncan carried their weapons openly. They have been charged with a violation of Denver Revised Municipal Code 38-117.5(b), which forbids the open carry of deadly weapons within the city limits. This error is significant because the Colorado constitution protects the right of every person to carry weapons openly: "The right of no person to keep and bear arms in defense of person, home, and property: shall be called in question; however, nothing in this constitution shall be construed to justify the practice of carrying concealed weapons." (Art II, Sect. 13) When contacted about this story, Michelle Konieczny, media director for the Stanley for U.S. Senate campaign said, "Obviously, no one can claim that the Colorado constitution justifies the practice of carrying concealed weapons. Therefore, the Rocky's misstatement of fact in this story is a particularly egregious error. I have been sending releases to the Rocky Mountain News describing Rick Stanley's intention to carry a weapon openly for the past 30 days. How could the Rocky Mountain News get it wrong?"
