"Libertarian's
action at Civic Center was
anything but civil disobedience"

| In
this story you referred to Stanley's arrest for carrying
a gun in Denver's Civic Center as "the result of an
act of civil disobedience." Why would you call this an act of civil disobedience? Plainly and simply, Rick Stanley did nothing except break the law, a law that arose because a majority of those voting determined that people were best served by having areas where carrying weapons was prohibited. Would you have called it an act of civil disobedience if Mr. Stanley had pulled out the gun and shot Senator Allard while declaring that he was doing so to make a point that the laws against murder are invalid? The man broke the law. None of us should whitewash his action. If Mr. Stanley believes the law is wrong, he should try to convince a majority of the citizenry to elect officials who will change the law. Otherwise I suggest Mr. Stanley should hie himself off to someplace where carrying guns isn't against the law. And he should take his guns with him. My guess is, when he gets to wherever that is, he will find that the people don't speak English, you can't drink the water, and there are no seats on the toilets. /ss/ Ted Remington, |
