| Allard can expect a
shot across his bow from the environmental community this
week. The Republican from Loveland was dubbed one of the
"Dirty Dozen" in his last campaign, and the
League of Conservation Voters appears to be preparing to
hit him again this year. The group has scheduled a news
conference in Denver this week, when it releases its
environmental voting scorecard. "We want to go ahead and make sure that Allard's score gets the attention it deserves, especially with the vote coming up on the energy plan," said Scott Stoermer, a spokesman for the group. Even Allard's staff expects it to be low. Last time, the group gave him a "zero." But Allard spokesman Sean Conway calls it a political setup. He says Allard has built a top-notch record on local environmental issues. He produced a list of Allard's Clean 14, in honor of the 53 "fourteeners" in Colorado. The list details his work to pass the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge Act, and his work to turn the Spanish Peaks into wilderness. "Coloradans won't appreciate a Washington-based group coming in and telling them things that aren't true," Allard said. The "Dirty Dozen" list will be out in April. Stoermer wouldn't say that Allard would be among them, but hinted that there's no reason to think that Allard won't be on it. That could mean the group will pour thousands of dollars into independent television ads bashing Allard in his race against Libertarian Rick Stanley and likely Democratic opponent Tom Strickland. |
