Immigration
by Rick Stanley

Although Congress has not issued a Constitutional declaration of war, our nation is in fact, at war right now. We face a very inspired and committed enemy.

We have the right to close our borders to new immigration for a National Emergency. That condition exists today.

I call for the immediate closure of our borders to new immigration with a one year expiration. If we have eradicated our enemies by then, we can open our borders up again. Our country must remain secure during this crisis!

I support the free immigration of foreigners into the United States. They are valuable to the development of the American economy, and they bolster our long-lasting tradition of allowing individuals to emigrate from foreign soil. However, I oppose government policies that allow immigrants without green cards to receive welfare benefits at the state and federal levels. I also think the federal government should compensate state governments for benefits mandated by federal statutes.

I oppose the current constitutional interpretation which holds that any person born on American soil is an American citizen. I support passage of a constitutional amendment stipulating that a newborn person is a citizen of the United States, if either of that person's parents is an American citizen.

The US does not have to grant citizenship to anyone, just because they came here and decided to stay. We certainly should not give the same benefits to immigrants that we grant to citizens of the U.S. Citizenship must be earned, as has been the case for generations.

Still, we must remember that the cost of food products and many other goods would increase drastically without foreign workers. Americans have shown no interest in filling these entry-level, low-skilled positions. Immigrants have historically cut their teeth on these jobs that Americans have rejected.
